This event was everything that I hoped I would be and more. I saw some of my favourite youtubers and content creators, spoke to lots of hackespace folk, was inspired by lots of projects and came away with an unholy amount of stickers. It all felt a bit like when you give a dog too many tennis balls. It was overwhelming and amazing.
Here’s some of my favourite moments from the day and VIP dinner in tweets.
Here’s where I met some of my favourite youtubers, William Osman, Michael Reeves and Idubbbz.
I was also surprised to find a hall at makerfaire dedicated to ‘food makers’ and was delighted to buy a bag of mushroom jerky to snack on for the day.
Part of the Maker’s Mission is to bring back the experience to grow maker culture in Australia. I think we have lot of great makers but, often, they don’t think of themselves as makers. To host a similar event at scale, an intimate knowledge of the local ecosystems and communities that could fit into this space is required to bring together our own Australian cultural spin to our own Makerfaire. Home grown events and clubs like lawn mower racing, motorised esky modding, handmade wooden surfboards, Men’s sheds, STEM schools, Makerspaces, hackerspaces, Modifyre (Australia’s Burning Man equivalent), Woodford and the Planting all have a place in the Queensland Maker Ecosystem. They just might not know it yet.
An event like this also needs to have a heavy focus on upskilling, to be able to give the local community the skills to build bigger and better. Some sort of pre-festival skills workshops or something similar would reap annual growth in contributions year by year. Part of the reason why we don’t have something like this already is due to lack of skills and opportunities to learn in our regional and rural areas.
I think this will be a recurring take home message for me on the Maker’s Mission, but we definitely need to think bigger, all of us.
Tune in for more on the Maker’s Mission this week, we’re only up to day three!
